In-Depth Interview Research

One-on-one conversations that explore individual experiences, motivations, and decision journeys in depth. Our expert interviewers uncover the nuanced insights that only personal, focused conversations can reveal.

What Are In-Depth Interviews?

In-depth interviews (IDIs) are one-on-one, semi-structured qualitative conversations between a trained researcher and a single participant. Unlike focus groups, where group dynamics shape the discussion, IDIs create a private, focused environment where participants share personal experiences, detailed decision journeys, and honest opinions without the influence of others.

IDIs are the methodology of choice when you need to understand complex individual experiences — a patient's treatment journey, an executive's procurement process, a consumer's brand relationship over time, or a shopper's internal dialogue at the shelf. The one-on-one format allows interviewers to follow unexpected threads, probe deeper on critical moments, and build the rapport needed for participants to share authentically.

At Galloway Research Service, our interviewers bring deep industry expertise across consumer, B2B, healthcare, government, and multicultural audiences. Every interviewer is bilingual, and our InsIQual platform provides AI-assisted probing suggestions, real-time transcription, and automated theme detection that enhance the quality and efficiency of every interview.

Types of In-Depth Interviews

Consumer IDIs

One-on-one interviews with individual consumers exploring purchase decisions, brand relationships, product usage experiences, and unmet needs. Consumer IDIs capture the personal context and emotional depth that group settings can inhibit.

B2B & Executive IDIs

Interviews with business decision-makers, C-suite executives, procurement professionals, and industry experts. B2B IDIs navigate complex organizational dynamics, long sales cycles, and multi-stakeholder purchase processes.

Healthcare Professional IDIs

Specialized interviews with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and healthcare administrators. Our team understands clinical terminology, prescribing behavior frameworks, and the regulatory context of healthcare decision-making.

Online Video IDIs

Remote one-on-one interviews via our InsIQual Video platform with full recording, transcription, and AI-assisted analysis. Online IDIs reach participants anywhere while maintaining the personal connection of face-to-face conversation.

Telephone IDIs

Audio-only interviews ideal for busy professionals, geographically dispersed audiences, or participants who prefer the anonymity of a phone conversation. Conducted from our bilingual call center with professional recording.

Sensitive Topic IDIs

Carefully designed interviews for personal health conditions, financial difficulties, workplace issues, or other sensitive subjects. Our moderators create safe, confidential environments that encourage honest, detailed sharing.

When to Use In-Depth Interviews

IDIs are the right methodology when individual depth, privacy, or audience accessibility requires a one-on-one approach.

Complex Decision Journeys

When you need to map a multi-step purchase process with all its influences, barriers, information sources, and decision criteria, the uninterrupted flow of an IDI captures the full narrative.

Sensitive or Confidential Topics

Health conditions, financial behavior, workplace issues, and other personal topics require the privacy and trust of a one-on-one conversation that group settings cannot provide.

Expert & Executive Audiences

C-suite executives, physicians, engineers, and other high-value audiences expect individualized attention and may share more openly without peer observation.

Competitive Intelligence

Understanding why customers chose competitors, what triggers brand switching, or what drives loyalty requires the depth and follow-up flexibility of individual interviews.

Pre-Quantitative Exploration

Before designing a large-scale survey, IDIs help identify the right questions, response options, and language to use by exploring the topic in consumers' own words.

Low-Incidence Populations

When your target audience is rare or geographically scattered, IDIs conducted by phone or video efficiently gather qualitative data without requiring participants to travel.
